The Internazionali BNL:International Tennis in Rome

Our Blogger: Giuseppe

Key Biscayne Tennis

The Internazionali BNL d’Italia is an annual tennis tournament held in Rome, Italy, the Masters Series event at the Foro Italico. Aside from the Grand Slams, this is the highest-ranking tennis competition in the world, attracting the best male and female tennis players. The men’s competition is one of the 9 phases of the ATP Masters1000 circuit, while the women’s is one of the main WTA circuit competitions. The two competitions are currently held in separate weeks in May. The tournament is played on clay courts.

The event was previously known as the Italian Open and changed to its current name in 2002. The Italian tennis championship was first held in 1930 in Milan, where it was held until 1934 before being moved to the Foro Italico in Rome in 1935. Now is the highest profile tennis event in Italy; every year tennis enthusiasts from all over the round flock to the Eternal City to assist to the tournament.

In 2007, the Italian bank BNL becomes the “title sponsor” of the tournament. BNL has always developed strong relationships with Italian sport and its main associations: it has been the bank partner of the CONI (the Italian National Olympic Committee) for 70 years.

The venue

The spectacular Foro Italico was constructed between 1928 and 1938 and is located on the bank of the River Tevere. It hosts numerous sports venues including the Stadio Olimpico, which hosted the 1960 Summer Olympics.

internazionali-bnl-italia1

Mussolini built the sports centre to encourage young Italians to keep both bodies and mind fit. As such, the track and the tennis court were embellished with colossal marble sculptures of athletes who preside over all athletic efforts whilst showing off their fine physiques.

The event is more than just tennis – it is a total entertainment experience. High fashion, fine food, fabulous shopping and celebrity musical performances have made it one of the most glamorous stops on the ATP World Tour. To enjoy all of it don’t hesitate to make a reservation at Yes Hotel or Hotel Des Artistes!

Tickets for the Internazionali BNL d’Italia go on sale on the Italian Tennis Federation website.

When: 24 April – 8 May, 2010
Where: Foro Italico (Viale dei Gladiatori, 31 – 00194 ROMA)

TENNIS IN ROME- INTERNAZIONALE BNL D’ITALIA

This year again Rome will become the capital of tennis during May with the BNL Internazionale, a tournament that brings the best players in the world to the Eternal City.

serena_venus1 In fact, only the cream of the crop will meet this year in the Foro Italico, with the sad (for the males!) exception of Maria Sharapova, the Russian tennis celebrity who has decided to pull out of the tournament, since she is still not fully recovered from a shoulder surgery. Anyway, the top players of the WTA ranking will take part on the tournament, among them the popular sisters Serena and Venus Williams. Rafael Nadal will show up too and will be more than willing to take home again the first prize. Roger Federer, another world-class player will be looking for revenge, after two second places in past editions of the BNL Internazionale.

Almost as interesting as the tournament itself are the many side-events that will be  organized too. In fact this year will be held in Rome for the first time the tournament of beach tennis, assigned to Italy for the importance that the country has acquired in this new sport. As every year, too, there will be a special tournament for players in Wheelchairs.

As in the past years the BNL Internazionale will be held at the Foro Italico. To getrafael_nadal-sportsbook-bonus there from the Termini station take the red subway line and get off at the station Ottaviano. From there take the bus 32 and get off at the stop DE BOSIS/STADIO TENNIS.

For more information, check the official website, and to look for accommodation don’t hesitate to make a reservation at Yes Hotel or Hotel Des Artistes, two great options to stay in Rome: both are strategically located near the Termini station and offer great quality and comfort for reasonable prices.

VALLELUNGA AUTODROM-YOUR RALLY IN ROME!

imageFor something which started off as just a sand racetrack for horses, few would have tipped Vallelunga to become one of the most important racing training circuits in Europe.

But the 2.5 mile speed circuit, in Campagnano, north of Rome, can today claim to have trained some of the best motor sport drivers in the world.

The circuit’s Federal Rally School (CSAI), which trains young drivers into professionals, helped bring about the development of four-time world rally champion Tommy Makinen (now retired). image

Meanwhile, the circuit’s Federal Speed School has seen the rise to stardom of students such as Jarno Trulli, Giancarlo Fisichella, and Alexander Zanardi in Formula One.

The success story now seems a long way away from the early nineteen fifties, when a simple Roman horse lover bought the land to create a racing circuit for horses.

1951 saw the first motor race on the circuit and in 1957 it was developed further to fully accommodate motor racing.

Following extension work to make the track 3222 metres , it eventually welcomed the Rome Formula One Grand Prix in May 1957.

But it is difficult to see the circuit’s humble roots today. As well as boasting the two famous driving schools, the circuit also plays host to a safe driving course for absolutely every kind of motor vehicle.

There is even a special off-road section for specialist training in four-wheel drive vehicles. So whether it be, jungle, countryside or desert, the circuit is prepared to show drivers the ropes.

And the story doesn’t end there.

During regeneration work in 2001, an ancient Roman road was discovered running just off the site. This led to the discovery of an ancient Roman village, which is believed to date back to the Hellenistic age.

So who said the ancient Romans weren’t forward thinking? Ben- Hur might be history, but motorsport is the future.
