Rome: Conclave to Elect New Pope Starts Today

conclave

Today, cardinals from all around the world will meet in Rome to elect a new leader for the catholic church.

According to the Italian media there are a couple of strong names, namely cardinal Scola from Milano and cardinal Scherer from Sao Paolo but none of them seems to be able to get the 77 votes that are necessary to reach the majority of the preferences. Specialists do not expect a quick decision but it’s almost certain that the new pope will be elected before the week ends, probably on Sunday, a possibility that the city council has already contemplated, making arrangements to move the annual city marathonf from the morning to the evening in case Sunday turns out to be the big day.

Tonight rains in Rome and there is in the air a feel of anticipation while the eyes and cameras of the world turn to the Sistine chapel waiting for the white smoke signal that will open the next chapter in the history of catholicism.

Want to witness history? check our availability on-line or send us an e-mail to book your accommodation for this memorable day.

etruscan The National Museum of Villa Giulia is a place in Rome where you can discover the fascinating civilization of the Etruscans. The history of this ancient lost people it is still full of mystery and legends.

The greek mythology tells us about the domination of Etruscans pirates  in the Mediterranean Sea.They  established colonies on Corsica, Sardinia and perhaps even Spain and also founded cities in Tuscany( Viterbo, Tarquinia)and Capua (nearby Naples), at the time the last step of the Appian Way.

Nowadays the museum, once a papal palace shelters a priceless colection of art from the mysterious Etruscans. Known for their sophisticated art and design, they left a legacy of sarcophagi, bronze sculptures, terra-cotta vases and jewerly.

If you have time for only the masterpieces just look for the remarkable 6th century B.C. Apollo from Veio. The other two widely acclaimed statues here are Dea con Bambino(Godess with a Baby) and a greatly mutilated but still powerful Hercules.

Final, one of the most important Etruscan art treasures is the bride and bridegroom coffin, maybe one of the most romantic and iconic images of the ancient world.

Our hotels,Yes Hotel and Hotel Des Artistes are in perfect location! Stay with us to enjoy  your summer holiday and learn more about the Etruscans!

One of the most important art galleries in Rome,Galleria Borghese houses part of the Borghese collection of paintings ,sculptures and antiquities.

The museum is located  inside a suggestive landscape garden,Villa borghese, the largest park in Rome after Villa Doria Pamphili and Villa Ada, surely the nearest to an ideal of eternal beautiness  as the number of buildings, museums, and attractions that it contains. Also in Villa borghese or nearby you will find the Galleria Nazionale d’arte moderna,Villa Giulia,Villa Medici,Casa del Cinema.

As regards the Galleria Borghese, here you can admire some of the most important creations by  Antonello da Messina,Giovanni Bellini, Raffaello,Tiziano,Correggio,Gian Lorenzo Bernini,Canova,Caravaggio. On my opinion, among all the famous  works that are inside its twenty rooms, some sculptures of  Bernini are worth to be seen for theirs dynamism and for the virtuosism, such as his Apollo and Dafne. If you are an art lover you must visit at least once in your life Galleria Borghese and from  december 2011 for three months  65

The Janiculum Hill

gianicolo_garibaldi2Janiculum, or Gianicolo in Italian, is the second highest hill in the contemporary city of Rome and separate from the famous seven hills of Rome. The Aurelian wall made it’s way up the Janiculum hill in order to include inside the walls of the city the water mills that were used to grind corn and make bread.

Locals often come here for a walk as the park provides a welcome escape from the hectic streets of the city. There are also some activities for children to enjoy here like an authentic puppet theatre.

Many tourists head here just to see the magnificently beautiful view of Rome from the top of the hill, however there are other interesting things atop this hill…..

The largest monument on the janiculum is the Garibaldi monument, an enormous equestrian statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi, honouring the italian patriot’s heroics on this hill in 1849.

Another monument can be found here, a formal arched memorial with the inscription ‘Roma o Morte’ (Rome or Death), honouring the other Italian patriots who died in the Italian independence wars between 1848 and 1870.

And one more magnificent thing to see is the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, a monumental baroque fountain built in the early 17th century by pope Paul V.the fountain was built here to celebrate the reopening of an old roman acqeduct, originally created in 109 AD by emperor Trajan. The fountain was named after the pope.

This is one of the most beautiful and interesting places to visit in the eternal city and it is worth your time to take a look. To reach the Janiculum Hill from the center of the city, Hope you enjoy.
