Crosby, Stills & Nash in Rome

crosby_stills_nash

It was more than rock or folk. It was more than the sum of elements from the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield and the Hollies, some of the most influential bands of the 60’s and 70’s. Crosby, Stills & Nash was way more than the sum of its parts, as is always the case with legendary groups.

David Crosby, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash first got together in 1969 and were joined in 1970 by Neil Young, also a former member of Buffalo Springfield and a rock and roll legend on his own right. The affair beetwen the trio and Young was on-and-off but with and without him the band has earned a foremost place in the rock and roll canon.

The original trio will be touring the United States and Europe this year and will reach Italy this summer. They’ll stop by in Rome July 19 to offer a concert at the Auditorium Parco della Musica.

The Auditorium, designed by famous Italian Architect Renzo Piano, is located at Viale Piero de Coubertain, and can be easily reached from our hotel, located near the station Termini: just take the red subway line until Flaminio and then take the tram 2 and get off at the stop “Apollodoro”.

You might  have already  walked enough through the streets of  Rome and visited any possible museum or art exhibition,  and while you are trying to quench your thirst with a bottle of water under the shadow of a tree you are wondering how nice it would be to dive into the sea and relax on a beach not far from Rome.

Below you will find some of the beaches located near Rome that you can reach by train and enjoy your swimming.

ostiaSpiaggia

The nearest one is called Ostia, mostly frequented by Romans looking for a break from the daily stress of the city. If you walk along the beach you will find another beach called Torvajanica,

where you can find more space but is less organized. To arrive at Ostia is very simple:  go to Termini station and take the line B (the blue one) , get off at Piramide – Ostiense stop and from there you have a train that takes  you directly to Ostia  ( Station Ostia Lido; you use the same ticket from the metro). Pay attention when you leave from there  because the trains stop about 22:00 and there is the risk to remain stranded.

sperlonga

Another beach near Rome is Sperlonga, more beautiful but far from the center. The water there is very clean and to take sun you can choose between the plastic chairs you can rent on the beach or to use your  own towel, the prices are not very high if you decide to rent a chair. If you visit the center of Sperlonga and want to have dinner or a drink, pay attention on the prices because they can be a bit high in some places.

To reach Sperlonga is very easy , go to the Termini station and take the train for Sperlonga , you get off at Stazione Fondi- Sperlonga from where you have a shuttle that takes you directly to the beach for the cost of one Euro per person.

Enjoy and relax!!!

The Janiculum Hill

gianicolo_garibaldi2Janiculum, or Gianicolo in Italian, is the second highest hill in the contemporary city of Rome and separate from the famous seven hills of Rome. The Aurelian wall made it’s way up the Janiculum hill in order to include inside the walls of the city the water mills that were used to grind corn and make bread.

Locals often come here for a walk as the park provides a welcome escape from the hectic streets of the city. There are also some activities for children to enjoy here like an authentic puppet theatre.

Many tourists head here just to see the magnificently beautiful view of Rome from the top of the hill, however there are other interesting things atop this hill…..

The largest monument on the janiculum is the Garibaldi monument, an enormous equestrian statue of Giuseppe Garibaldi, honouring the italian patriot’s heroics on this hill in 1849.

Another monument can be found here, a formal arched memorial with the inscription ‘Roma o Morte’ (Rome or Death), honouring the other Italian patriots who died in the Italian independence wars between 1848 and 1870.

And one more magnificent thing to see is the Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, a monumental baroque fountain built in the early 17th century by pope Paul V.the fountain was built here to celebrate the reopening of an old roman acqeduct, originally created in 109 AD by emperor Trajan. The fountain was named after the pope.

This is one of the most beautiful and interesting places to visit in the eternal city and it is worth your time to take a look. To reach the Janiculum Hill from the center of the city, Hope you enjoy.
